Laser Hair Removal
What is Laser Hair Removal and How Does it Work?
Laser Hair Removal (LHR) is an FDA approved, safe, and effective treatment for permanent hair reduction. Many women and men in Penticton are finally experiencing freedom from shaving, waxing, razor rash, ingrown hairs and embarrassing re-growth because they have found a permanent solution with advanced laser technology.
Laser Hair Removal is our treatment of choice to permanently reduce unwanted face and/or body hair. When your qualified laser technician activates the Cynosure Apogee Elite laser, it will emit pulses of light. This light will target the melanin (brown pigment) in the hair, travel along the hair shaft, and deliver heat into the actively growing hair follicles, eventually destroying them forever. Since your hair is not all actively growing at the time of treatment, several treatments are necessary to target each new active growth cycle. A typical appointment is usually only 15-30 minutes from start to finish.
What Should I Expect Before, During, and After the Treatment?
You will shave the night before or the day of your appointment. There should be no stubble on the surface of the skin; however, the hair shaft must be in place, so there can be no waxing or plucking the area within 6 weeks of treatment. The only recommended grooming option throughout your course of LHR will be shaving.
At the start of your appointment, the laser technician will cleanse the treatment area and apply a cool conducting gel. During the procedure, the technician and client wear protective goggles. Then the technician will gently pulse the laser over the treatment area, while simultaneously, cooling the skin with an attached cooling system. This helps to minimize discomfort; however, you will still experience a sensation similar to an elastic band snapping over the treated skin. Laser hair removal is generally tolerated very well.
After your treatment, there may be some temporary redness and possibly some swelling/tenderness in the treatment area. This usually resolves within an hour of your treatment and requires no downtime. You may notice shedding of the treated hair in the days or weeks following treatment. After this process is complete, there is usually a period of 3+ weeks where there is little re-growth.
How Many Treatments are Required?
Hair grows in 3 cycles. The laser only affects hair when it is in its early-growth phase. The laser will not effectively target dormant hair, or late-stage growth, thus, approximately six to eight treatments are usually required, with four to six weeks between each treatment. Depending upon hair type, skin type, genetics and hormone factors, some clients may require further maintenance treatments; however, 60-80% hair reduction is common after 6-8 consecutive treatments.
How Do I Know if I am a Candidate for LHR?
Laser Hair Removal is most effective in people with dark brown or black hair and pale skin; however, it can also be used on some individuals with darker skin types. The lighter the skin and the coarser/darker the hair, the better your results will generally be. Blonde, grey, and red hair does not respond to LHR treatment, only brown or black hair will respond effectively. LHR is cannot be done in areas where the skin is tanned. A tan increases the levels of melanin in the skin and thus increases the risk of unwanted side effects such as burns and skin discoloration. This is why we highly recommend completing your course of LHR treatments in the Fall and Winter months. A qualified laser technician will meet with you for a complimentary consultation to discuss whether or not you are a candidate for this treatment. This meeting includes discussion about your health history, genetic background, your expectations, treatment considerations, as well as the benefits and rare but possible risks associated with the procedure. At this time, you will also receive a list of pre and post treatment instructions.
